College Prep Rx Offers the Following Services

8th Grade Pre High-School
Initial Consultation (see above) + 1 to 2 meetings totaling less then 90 minutes

Freshman Year
Two meetings

Sophomore Year:
Three meetings

Junior Year
Minimum three meetings

Junior Summer and Senior Year
Meetings as required to complete applications

 

Initial Consultation (any time)
30 minute free consultation to discuss service objectives followed by:
Getting to know the student and his/her family; academic and extracurricular status and objectives

• Complete initial student and parent questionnaire
• General overview of college interests and fields of study
• Parents should review financial considerations and www.finaid.org and www.fastweb.com

8th Grade Pre High-School
Initial Consultation (see above) + 1 to 2 meetings totaling less then 90 minutes

• Review ninth grade courses and four year academic plan based on current course load, interests, and abilities
• Encourage a realistic, yet challenging curriculum based on strengths
• Discuss potential extracurricular interests/pursuits: athletics, arts, performance arts.
• Begin academic and extracurricular resume.

Freshman Year
Two meetings

• Update Initial Student and Parent Questionnaire
• Review academic progress and four year academic plan; update goals and courses as necessary.
• Update Resume: document awards, service hours, club membership
• Encourage participation in clubs, extracurriculars, sports, arts, community service. Identify one or two you will continue for four years.
• Meet your school counselor and take the PLAN (if offered) as a standardized test prep
• Plan for fun and meaningful summer experiences, tour college campuses when convenient.

Sophomore Year:
Three meetings

• Update Initial Student and Parent Questionnaire
• Review academic progress and four year academic plan; update goals and courses as necessary.
• Update Resume: document awards, service hours, club membership.
• Identify leadership roles in extracurricular and service activities.
• Encourage participation in clubs, extracurriculars, sports, arts, community service. Identify one or two you will continue for four years.
• Meet your school counselor and take the PLAN (if offered) as a standardized test prep.
• Administer and review a career interest survey
• Identify early college list based on student and parent feedback.
• Testing:
• Register and take the PSAT
• Consider choices and timing of  SAT, ACT, and SAT-II for junior year.
• Discuss test preparation. CollegePrepRx is not an test counselor. We can provide general test preparation hints and recommend other providers for rigorous test preparation.
• Plan for fun and meaningful summer experiences, including several college visits

Junior Year
Minimum three meetings

• Update Initial Student and Parent Questionnaire
• Review academic progress and four year academic plan; update goals and courses as necessary.
• Prepare Resume: document awards, service hours, club membership.
• Identify leadership roles in extracurricular and service activities.
• Identify sources for academic and other letters of recommendation.
• In first semester start to seriously discuss and narrow down potential college choices.
• Coordinate and Attend local visits by college representatives.
• Actively visit and tour local and regional colleges and plan out-of-state visits during winter and spring breaks.
• By June we will create a list of 8 "best match" schools, including two "safety" schools and two "stretch" schools.
• Mock college interviews.
• Identify early college list based on student and parent feedback.
• Testing:
• Register for winter SAT/ACT/SAT-II as required.
• Discuss test preparation. CollegePrepRx is not a test counselor. We can provide general test preparation hints and recommend other providers for rigorous test preparation.
• Evaluate scores and reconsider college choices and/or additional testing as required.
• Athletes and artists should prepare DVDs, clippings and/or portfolios; register with NCAA National Clearinghouse if interested in D1 or D2 athletics; begin to contact college coaches and advisors
• Plan for fun and meaningful summer experiences, including several college visits

-Coordinate a visit to remaining top 8 schools
*be sure to register to attend the info session, student tour
*schedule an interview when possible
*visit with a coach/departmental head
*consider attending a college sports camp/arts camp on your college list

• Collect college applications as they become available through the summer
• Review prospective essays; consider prospective topics and rough drafts before senior year begins

 

Junior Summer and Senior Year
Meetings as required to complete applications

• Update Initial Student and Parent Questionnaire
• Finalize College Choices prior to Labor Day
• Retake ACT/SAT if necessary
• Apply in September to colleges with rolling admissions (U-M, MSU)
• Draft and review all essays in September
• Collect teacher recommendations (remember copies and thank yous)
• Finalize resume and sport/art portfolios
• Collect and send transcripts and test scores
• Consider Early Decision, Early Action and Regular Admission Options
• Complete applications and submit as early as practical
• Complete FAFSA
• Review and apply for scholarships
• Review responses from schools, evaluate options, final school visits if necessary
